International Night is a vibrant celebration of cultures that brings together friends, families, and diverse communities. Every year, Mill Creek Student Council holds this event in the cafeteria near the end of February. The cafeteria transforms into a colorful showcase of diverse traditions with tables representing different countries, each offering their culture’s foods, and boards that display their unique history.
The air was filled with the aroma of the various cuisines from around the world. Crowds of people walked around, going stand by stand experiencing the many different traditions. South Korea had different games like “Gonggi” and “Ddakji” which is a game where the goal is to flip over a folded paper by throwing another folded paper onto it. Students wore traditional dresses called “Hanbok” and taekwondo uniforms. People got to practice their taekwondo skills by putting on gear and trying out kicks taught by one of the students. There were also traditional Korean foods like “tteok” which are rice cakes. Aleena Tabba, 9 said, “It was fun trying new foods, and even though I couldn’t flip over the paper, it was still exciting to try!”
There were a few performances throughout the night that highlighted traditional dances and music that created an energetic experience. There were many interactive activities like henna art and storytelling which gained appreciation for different cultures.
More than just an event, International Night is a chance for many people to understand more about unfamiliar cultures and celebrate diversity. It’s a night to learn about the rich backgrounds and the connection and discovery of the many cultures that make up the school community.
