On Jan 29, Mill Creek High School hosted an elective fair in the upstairs atrium. The registration process started on Feb 4, and students got to pick the new classes they wanted to participate in next year. The purpose of the elective fair was to give students a better understanding of the classes they can join. Students are allowed to have two elective classes each year and students are deciding what electives to take.
Teachers and students were promoting their electives with vibrant and informational display posters. Some electives even had hands-on demonstrations of labs, equipment used, etc. For example, German teacher Nicole Courtney, set up two demonstration posters with four different color brochures. The interactive displays, demonstrations, brochures made students feel on what each elective would be like.

Students walked around the different types of stations and looked at the variations of electives. Teachers believe that students should have the opportunity to look at and observe new electives for the upcoming year. ”Learning German is like learning any language. It’s a foreign language, it’s new vocabulary, a new way of putting words together to get your meaning across.” said German teacher, Nicole Courtney. Some students found some classes more appealing than others, and there were many students with the same interests crowded around different stands. A lot of students were mostly crowded around the foreign language and the science electives like forensic science, microbiology, and oceanology”

“We think some of the most appealing factors, the presentations she does like we do fill in notes but they’re actually interesting topics that we talk about, and then we apply those topics to actual labs so we get to see it in our lab’s Microbiology booth at elective fair Jan 29. and we test on it, so it’s pretty easy class,” say Forensic Science students Brooke Harris and Charley Vega.
Mill Creek offers a variety of electives for students to choose from, many have their favorites. After interviewing different students, the majority have different opinions. “AP psychology looks the most interesting to me and it will help me in the future because I want to be a psychiatrist.” Makayla Frasier, 10. Natalie Irizarry had a different favorite “Marketing is my favorite elective. I tried it my freshman year and it was really interesting to learn how to create a business”. Juniors Jaidyn Corbett and Michael Owusu both love orchestra, “Beginning orchestra was my favorite class. I made so many long-term friends” Corbett stated. “You get to learn new instruments, and instruments have been proven to help with pattern recognition and other things,” Owusu mentions.
The elective fair at Mill Creek High School provided students with a valuable opportunity to explore a wide range of classes and discover new interests. From hands-on demonstrations to engaging discussions with teachers, students gained insight into electives that could shape their future academic and career paths. As registration approaches, the excitement from the fair will guide students in making informed decisions about the electives that best suit their passions and goals.
