After writing the story, “Is the lunch hour too chaotic?” We went to Mill Creek High School’s Principal for a follow-up interview.
From the perspective of Mr. Lane, talked about his own opinion and how he is trying to improve the hour lunch. In the interview, Mr. Lane mentioned how the hour lunch is still something everyone is getting used to, especially after the quarantine year of COVID-19. However, Mr. Lane plans on changing the hour lunch. Mill Creek is on the way to turning Friday Lunch into a better and more enjoyable experience for everyone. Even though changes are being made, not every conflict is solved due to restrictions.
“We have some more things planned for it but right now I think it’s the beginning steps of trying to find ways to give students time and space to relax,” Jason Lane, FAC said. “Starting I know it’s boring, not a lot to do yet but like I said it’s our first time back into it but we have some ideas and things that we’ll try to roll out in the second semester,” Mr. Lane added.
Mr. Lane stated that there are changes to be made, however, Mill Creek has just started their hour lunch system again so students and staff would have to adjust to this system first before any changes could be made.
“You’re never gonna be able to serve 1000 people in a short time so you will just have to space things out of ‘hey lunch time is big I’m not gonna go to the pizza line right now ima have to wait a little bit’ that’s always going to be an issue even in the regular lunch when only half the kids are there if everyone goes to the pizza line at one time your gonna have the same issue so that’s just people getting used to it again.” Mr. Lane said.
“I think there are some easy things that we could do to kinda help designate where the line starts, getting people from cutting in line and that kind of stuff, those are the things we are looking at,” Mr. Lane said.
Mr. Lane Agreed that the lunch line is a problem we are having right now but the lunch line is always going to be an issue. However, some things can be used to make the line process better such as giving a senior a space to sit if they want to sit somewhere else Mr. Lane mentioned.
“Part of the issues we have is with long lunch right now the way we’re doing it, one day a week were also giving teachers a chance to have a break so we don’t have anybody on duty except for assistant principals,” Mr. Lane said.
“If we make some modifications for next semester and we’re looking to do some different things, “ Mr. Lane added.
Mr. Lane explained that by giving teachers a break to enjoy themselves, staff would need to be removed from duty. This however limits the locations students are able to be at, thus preventing students from going outside or other places without a pass.
Although Mr. Lane was not able to fix all the issues in the lunch hour, He gave us many more options that could be coming to us in the future such as more flexible seating options for students, and activities. Overall Mr. Lane and his team are trying to work on more options for students during the hour lunch. This also includes figuring out what they can handle as well since they still have other jobs to carry out.
