Humans are rather interesting. We all have the same needs for eating, sleeping, and talking, yet we each have our own opinions about life, our likes and dislikes. This does not exclude music, Music is one thing that brings us together, yet separates us with each person’s taste. Because of our different music tastes, the Top 25 songs do not represent all of our tastes individually. I went out into the halls of Mill Creek High and asked the question: What is your opinion on the top 25 songs?

Now that you know what the top 25 songs are, let’s ask the big question. What do Students and Teachers think of the top 25??
The Popularity Contest
As I interviewed people around the school, one thing became clear: many students had similar opinions, especially regarding artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Tyler, The Creator. They felt these artists appeared on the playlist too often. This raised the question: why do songs by these artists show up so much?
The Answer
The answer became clear during my interview with Tristan Andreorio, 9. When I asked him why he thought these artists were repeated so much, he explained, “The reason that artists like Sabrina Carpenter and Tyler, The Creator, show up so often is because of how they target their audience. These artists quickly gather a large fan base. Because of their popularity, radio stations and streaming services play their songs a lot. This helps attract new listeners, which keeps the cycle going.” So, it’s really about the artists’ ability to build big fan followings quickly, which keeps their songs in constant rotation on these big lists, not the actual song.
A Good Song
During my interviews, a recurring theme emerged—why do some truly great songs seem to be missing from the charts, while others, perhaps less memorable, make the cut? It’s a fascinating and complex conversation, with many factors at play. Ultimately, it all boils down to perspective. Music is inherently subjective; each person has a unique interpretation of what makes a song “good” or “bad”.
