Black History Month is from February 1- March 1. Black History is important, it celebrates the rich culture of African Americans and their heritage and shows that in the face of adversity, they still fight. It’s a very festive time of the month at Mill Creek have a contest for posters and the best drawings that are a representation of Black History. Whoever has the best drawing gets a $50 gift card. They will announce the winner at the end of February.

A club called African American Cultural Associate (AACA) makes people aware of black culture and why this month is important. The club takes a trip down to the African American Museum. They also work with the teachers to decorate the school as well as classroom doors.

They have meetings to discuss what they will be doing next in terms of teaching and showing the importance of Black History.  The next meeting will be held on February 21. Kaysheila Mitchell is one of the leaders of the AACA club and she said, “It’s my first year on the committee but I hope by the end of February you see all the great things we have done and our work all over the school.”

Nia Butler, 12, the president of the AACA committee said, “I love working in this club. I just want everyone to understand the importance of black culture and how we influence everything in the world one way or another.” The club wants African Americans to feel appreciated because they weren’t always celebrated.
