The multi-award winning book “The Inheritance Games” by Jennifer Lynn Barnes was published on Sept. 1, 2020.  The first book in the “The Inheritance Games” series contains 400 pages. This book has been recommended to readers who have enjoyed reading “One of Us is Lying” by Karen M. McManus and also to viewers who enjoyed the film “Knives Out”.  Barnes’s book is a mystery fiction book with many mysteries and plot twists. 

The main character Avery Grambs lives in her car even though her half-sister Libby is her legal guardian. Her mother is dead and her father has been an absent figure. She has simple plans for simple needs: Get out of high school with a scholarship and be well off.  Things take a turn  as she is called to the principal’s office for the second day in a row. When she arrives she meets a young man who is not the principal. He tells her that she has been written in a will to inherit from a man she doesn’t know.  This isn’t just any person though. It is Tobias Hawthorne,the richest man in Texas. That same day, Avery and half-sister Libby are flown out to Texas. When they arrive, they meet the Hawthorne Family, including four nephews and two displeased daughters. Events come from every corner that changes Avery’s life as she tries to solve mystery after mystery about Tobias Hawthorne and what he left her. 

Barnes’s book has won more awards than any of her other books. It has won the Teen Buckeye Book Award, was nominated for the Edgar Award for Young Adult, the Goodreads Choice Award for Young Adult and YALSA’s Teens Top Ten awards.  “The Inheritance Games” series is also Barnes’s most popular book series.
