Many students each school year complain about the workload that Gwinnett County, or their school, gives them. From tests and essays to summer reading assignments, it can be stressful for countless students. One conversation starter after summer is the reading assignment, or jump-start assignment, that Gwinnett County schools instructs students to complete. “My opinion is that the summer reading is a good idea to keep students in a learning state of mind during the summer. It is pretty easy, but if students have a question there is no way to contact their teacher,” said freshman Ashlyn Buick.  The school claims reading is helpful and can prevent diseases, and on the instructions for the summer assignment, it explains that reading can “reduce stress, improve memory, slow down the aging process, increase empathy, and increase tolerance for uncertainty.” Sophomore Abbie Herrin said, “the reading was easy, but I found it difficult to motivate myself to actually do the assignment.”

Last year, some Mill Creek students cheated on the summer assignment. So this year the assignment has been changed from computer oriented to an in class assignment. “We are grading primarily what they do in class to help prevent cheating,” says 9th grade language arts teacher Mrs. Knight. The students were required to read and fill out guided notes. Then, on August 25th, students in their language arts classes will do an assignment based on their guided notes. Junior Reilly Fannin says, “ The assignment isn’t all that bad, but I still wish we didn’t have to do it.”
