Since last year, screeners at airports across the nation have detected more than 4,000 firearms in carry-on bags so far this year, and nearly 300 of them were found in Atlanta’s Hartsfield Jackson International Airport. Most of which were loaded, which caused the numbers to jump up by 17% since last year. Most of the flyers that have been caught with a gun say they had simply forgotten it was in their bag. The majority of these “inncoent mistakes” were found in airports that have less stricter laws about the right to posses a firearm.

There had been three reported cases last year where it had seemed that the TSA scanners had missed the firearm in the scanning process, but the gun was then found when the passenger was heading back home. TSA Administrator David Pekoske stated, ” It happens because the technology doesn’t get everything all the time…either there’s a technology issue, there’s a procedural issue, or there’s a training issue.” Passengers at the airports are also getting a little nervous about the screeners missing the guns because they think that if even one gun is missed, something very wrong could happen in the airport or on a plane when there is a mis-checked firearm.” I’m troubled by that, too”, Pekoske stated.” I think that everybody in TSA is troubled by it and mistakes happen…And I can’t give you an answer as to how often it happens. But when it does happen, we do everything we can to figure out why it happened.” However, there is a law saying that you can have a gun in your checked bag, but just not in a carry-on.
