How To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee was first released 58 years ago, and has been made into more than 40 million copies. It struck a cord in the sense of American Literature by being one of America’s Most Loved Novels. It has already been turned into a movie and is now being turned into a Broadway show. It is about a lawyer, Atticus Finch, who has to defend a black man from the accusation that he had raped a white woman. The story is set in Alabama in the 1930s.

Scott Rudin is the producer, Bartlett Sher is the director, and Jeff Daniels is playing the lead role. The first show will be on Dec. 13 in New York City.

The actors and actresses that are in the play are a little apprehensive about it all because they all want to make sure that they get everything right and not upset viewers. “The challenge is expectations. The challenge is swimming into the national memory between people who have a deep memory of the book, people who love the film, and people who are going to come into the theater and see it now, how to connect all of those different perspectives,” says Sher.

LaTanya Richardson Jackson is going to be playing the role of the maid of Finch’s family. Her role will now have a voice for her to be able to speak up upon the injustice of the black man being accused. Jackson claims, “This whole idea of justice and what’s right it–is still a theme that is universally being discussed.”

At Mill Creek, freshmen read How To Kill A Mockingbird, so freshmen and upperclassmen will be able to understand and find the new Broadway show interesting.
