Mrs.Cox, a science teacher here at Mill Creek High School has built a spring garden on campus. Her Environmental Science students have selected the produce that will be planted in the garden.

Produce such as beets, carrots, collards, and kale have been chosen to be planted. The environmental students got to pick the produce to plant, and they collaborated with the Food Science teachers so that some of the produce could be used in their classes for making healthy and nutritious meals.

The planting process is to take place between the months of January and February, and harvesting the produce will occur from March through May. The purpose of the garden is so that students will be able to complete their unit on agriculture and the environment. The garden will allow students to understand the necessity of promoting plant productivity and practice sustainable and responsible food productions for human consumption.

The aspirations for the garden according to Mrs.Cox, “We would like to make our garden available to our school community in the future. It will provide a place for students to connect with nature and learn techniques that are needed to produce a portion of their own food supply for their future families.”

As the garden is still in progress, one of the hopes is to have a successful harvest so that families that struggle with food security can have availability to the garden.  The garden will hopefully provide a unique  and educational experience for students to work together.
